Everything has competition in this digital world. Specially, the photo based companies are having competitions for themselves every day. It is photo editing which has made the photography world easier and has created a diversion. Sometimes after photography, you may not feel happy about the photo background you have and you feel like removing or changing the background. It is not possible to make changes in the background that often. But you can do that with photo editing technique like Photoshop path.
Here, we are going to show you how to draw Photoshop clipping path and remove background using a simple yet effective technique.
Open the Photo
To draw a Photoshop Clipping Path, you need to open the photo in Photoshop at the first place. You have to open the Photoshop application in your windows first. To open the photo in Photoshop, go to File>Open which will open the windows. Now go to the drive where your required photo is located. Click on the photo and press ‘enter’ in the keyboard. The photo will be opened.
You can also open the photo in Photoshop by dragging the photo into the Photoshop bar which will import the photo in Photoshop within a fraction of second.
Take Path Layer
Photoshop is all about working with layers. It is layer that makes the photo editing easier. Here, we need to take a path layer to draw clipping path in Photoshop. To take the path layer, go to layer panel and click on path. From there click on the square icon next to the delete bin, clicking that you will get a path layer named ‘path 1’.
Select Pen Tool
After taking the path layer named ‘path 1’ we are going to draw clipping path on that layer. There are several tools in Photoshop which work tremendously to draw clipping path. But the pen tool is the best for drawing clipping path. To select pen tool, go to the tool bar and click on the pen icon. Doing that, the pen tool will be activated. You can also activate the pen tool by simply pressing ‘p’ on keyboard.
Draw Photoshop Path
As we have activated the pen tool, now it is time for creating a Photoshop clipping path over the subject we have selected. You have to be very careful while drawing a clipping path over the subject. You have to draw the path according to the shape of the subject. Here we have created a clipping mask over the man without taking the background inside. You have to make sure that not a single portion of background is getting inside the clipping path.
It is time for making the selection after drawing the whole clipping path. Click on the path layer at first and right click on the mouse. Doing that you will get a dialogue box from where you have to click on make selection. Or you can also press ‘ctrl+enter’ on keyboard by which the path will be selected. You will get to see many dots moving around the masked areas which indicate that the subject clipping path has been selected.
Remove the Background
We have completed all the steps of drawing a Photoshop clipping path without the last level. In this lap, we are going to remove the background. As the path has been selected, click on the quick mask tool. Doing that, you will get a dialogue box containing different colors. Select your required color and press ‘enter’. You can also press ‘q’ on the keyboard to remove the background.

Photoshop path to create a new background
Open the image
To edit an image on Photoshop you will need to open it on the canvas. There are two different ways of opening an image in Photoshop. The easiest and less time consuming way is to drag and drop it on the canvas. The other way is to open the image from the file option. You can also use keyboard to open an image just press “Ctrl+O”. These are the ways to open an image in Photoshop.
Take a Path layer
Now to make a Photoshop path you will need to have a path layer. A path layer basically keeps the path you draw on the image saved. You can use that path layer to do the selection any time. To take a path layer go to the path tab and click on the small page like icon on the bottom of the layer. Thus, you will have a new path layer to work on.
Activate Pen tool
Now to draw a path you will need to use anchor points. You can draw paths with anchor points using the one and only pen tool. To activate the pen tool go to the tool bar and click on the pen icon. You can use a keyboard shortcut by pressing “P”, it will activate the pen tool.

Now comes the most important part which is to draw the path. To do so you will need to use the mouse and click on the edge of the object. Use the mouse start creating paths around the object’s outer area. This way you can use anchor points to draw a Photoshop path.

You cannot deduct the background from the image using the path only. You will have to select the path then have to separate the object from the background. To select the path right click on the path layer and then select the make selection option from the menu. This way the path will get selected.
Cut out the selected area – Photoshop path
Now after selecting the area you will have to separate it from the image. To separate it at first activates any selection tool. You can click “W” to activate the Quick selection tool. Then right click on the selected are with the tool and select the Layer via Copy option from the menu. This will separate the object from the image.

After you deduct the selected area from the transparent background then you will get a new layer like the image I’ve shown below. It will have a new transparent background. It means that now any image you place behind this layer will become the background of it.

Now to add a new background to the transparent layers go to the file option and hit on the Place option on it. Then choose the image you want to use as a background from your PC storage. After you place it on the layer simply click on the tick mark above to finalize the placement.
Curve adjustment layer
Now sometimes the image of the object and the background won’t blend properly with each other. This is when you should use a Curve adjustment layer and blend it by using the curves. To activate the curves adjustment layer click on the adjustments layer button on bottom of the layer tab and chose curves.
Setup curves properly – Photoshop path
Use the curves on the adjustment layer like I did. Mix the colors and make the object blends with the overall background. This way you will have a new image with a new background using the Photoshop path technique.
